Rohypnol
Rohypnol is a brand name for flunitrazepam, a potent sedative. Rohypnol is also known as R-2, Rib, Roaches, Rophies, Roofies, Ruffies, Rpies, Rope, Roofenot, the Forget Pill, Mexican Valium, Circles, Roach-2, La Rocha, Roche, Roopies, and Ropies. Rohypnol is odorless, colorless, and tasteless. Rohypnol pills look like aspirin and may be sold in blister packages like many other medications, which may contribute to a misperception that Rohypnol is safe or legal.
Illicit use of Rohypnol is traced to Europe in the 1970's. Rohypnol appeared in the United States in the early 1990's. By April 1995, the Drug Enforcement Agency documented more than 1,000 cases of Rohypnol possession in 13 states.
In 1997, F. Hoffmann-La Roche, Inc., manufacturer of Rohypnol, reformulated the drug to release a bright blue dye when immersed in liquid. In dark liquids, it will turn the drink murky. Rohypnol will also cause particles to float to the top of the drink. However, Rohypnol may be produced illegally and these signs will not be present.
Date Rape Drug
Rohypnol is commonly referred to as the "date rape drug" where attackers slip the drug into an unsuspecting victim's drink without consent. Victims then become incapacitated, experience impaired judgment, and more vulnerable to sexual assault. Because of memory loss and confusion associated with Rohypnol, sexual assault cases are difficult to prosecute.
Safety
- Never accept drinks that are already open
- Do not leave a drink unattended
- Watch out for friends
- Avoid punchbowls that can be spiked
- Be wary of strangers
Effects
Rohypnol produces sedation, amnesia, and muscle relaxation. Sedation occurs within 20 to 30 minutes after ingestion and lasts for approximately 8 hours. Peak effects occur at about 2 hours and many victims lose consciousness.Rohypnol use can lead to physical and psychological dependence. Withdrawal symptoms may include headache, muscle pain, confusion, hallucinations, convulsions, or seizures. When used in combination with alcohol or other drugs, Rohypnol is particularly dangerous and presents a risk of overdose. Combining Rohypnol with Ecstasy can lead to heart failure, coma, and death. Rohypnol possession is a criminal offense. Someone who is intoxicated is incapable of giving consent, so sex with someone under the influence is a criminal act prosecutable as felony sexual assault.
