National Scholarships

There are many opportunities for students at OSU to compete for nationally and internationally competitive scholarship and fellowship awards, and to participate in international and national professional development and service internships. Below is information about some of these opportunities with links to the programs websites for additional information. Many other programs are available. Students are advised to contact the Scholar Development office for information on awards and programs that fit their specific goals.

Scholarships for Undergraduate Study (sophomores, juniors and transfer students)

BARRY M. GOLDWATER SCHOLARSHIPS - The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was established by Congress in 1986 to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years of service in the U.S. Senate. OSU is eligible to nominate up to four students who are in the sophomore or junior class annually. The awards are made on the basis of merit to students who have outstanding potential and intend to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. Each scholarship covers eligible expenses for tuition, fees, books, and room and board, up to a maximum of $7,500 annually. Junior-level scholarship recipients are eligible for a maximum of two years of scholarship support, and senior-level scholarship recipients are eligible for a maximum of one year of scholarship support.

JACK KENT COOKE FOUNDATION UNDERGRADUATE TRANSFER SCHOLARSHIPS - The mission of the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation is to help young people of exceptional promise reach their full potential through education. Approximately 30 scholarships awarded annually to students attending community colleges or two-year institutions and planning to transfer to four-year institutions. The awards are to help young people of exceptional promise reach their full potential through education and are focused in particular on outstanding individuals with financial need. Each award covers a portion of educational expenses, including tuition, living expenses, required fees, and books for the final two to three years of the baccalaureate degree. The amount and duration of awards vary by student based on the cost of attendance and the length of the program as well as other scholarships or grants received. The maximum available per student is $30,000 per year.

UDALL SCHOLARSHIPS - The Morris K. Udall Foundation was established by the U.S. Congress in 1992 to honor Morris King Udall's thirty years of service in the House of Representatives. Morris Udall's career was distinguished by civility, integrity, and consensus, as well as a commitment to preservation of the nation's natural environment. Consistent with these values, the Udall Foundation is committed to educating a new generation of Americans to preserve and protect their national heritage through studies in the environment, Native American health and tribal policy, and effective public policy conflict resolution. Approximately 80 scholarships of up to $5,000 are granted annually to sophomore and junior-level college students who: Have demonstrated commitment to careers related to the environment; or have demonstrated commitment to careers related to tribal public policy or health care, and are Native American or Alaska Native.

THOMAS R. PICKERING FOREIGN AFFAIRS FELLOWSHIP - The fellowship program is funded by the United States Department of State and is administered by the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation (WWNFF). The program seeks to recruit talented students in academic programs relevant to international affairs, political and economic analysis, administration, management, and science policy. The fellowship award includes tuition, room, board, and mandatory fees during the junior and senior years of college and during the first year of graduate study with reimbursement for books and one round-trip travel. The Fellow must commit to pursuing a graduate degree in international studies at one of the graduate schools identified by the WWNFF.

Scholarships for Graduate Study (juniors and seniors)

GATES CAMBRIDGE SCHOLARSHIPS - The Gates Cambridge Scholarship program was established in October 2000 by a donation from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Approximately one hundred scholarships are awarded annually for post-undergraduate study at the University of Cambridge, England. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of a person's intellectual ability, leadership capacity and desire to use their knowledge to contribute to society throughout the world by providing service to their communities and applying their talents and knowledge to improve the lives of others. Scholarships cover the full cost of study at Cambridge for a single person - namely, all approved University and College tuition fees, a maintenance allowance, a further discretionary allowance for study-related activities.

MARSHALL SCHOLARSHIPS - The Marshall Scholarships were founded by a British government Act of Parliament in 1953 and commemorate the humane ideals of the European Recovery Program (Marshall Plan). At least forty scholars are selected each year to study either at graduate or occasionally undergraduate level at an UK institution in any field of study. These awards are merit-based scholarships to finance young Americans of high ability to study for a degree in the United Kingdom. The objectives of the program include: to help scholars gain an understanding and appreciation of contemporary Britain, to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in science, technology, the humanities and social sciences and the creative arts at Britain's centers of academic excellence, and to motivate scholars to act as ambassadors from the USA to the UK and vice versa throughout their lives thus strengthening British American understanding. Each scholarship is held for two years and covers all the costs associated with study at a school in the United Kingdom.

GEORGE J. MITCHELL SCHOLARSHIPS - Named to honor the former U.S. Senator's pivotal contribution to the Northern Ireland peace process, the George J. Mitchell Scholarships are intended to familiarize and connect the next generation of American leadership with the island of Ireland. Normally, twelve Scholarships are awarded each year to support one year of graduate study in any discipline offered by an institution of higher learning in Ireland or Northern Ireland. Mitchell Scholars must exhibit superior records of academic excellence, leadership and public service. Strong, demonstrated achievements in all three areas are required. The Mitchell Scholarship provides tuition, housing, a $12,000 living expenses stipend, and international travel.

JACK KENT COOKE FOUNDATION GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS - The mission of the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation is to help young people of exceptional promise reach their full potential through education. Sixty-five scholarships awarded annually to seniors and recent graduates planning to attend graduate school for the first time. The awards are to help young people of exceptional promise reach their full potential through education and are focused in particular on outstanding individuals with financial need. Each award covers a portion of educational expenses, including tuition, living expenses, required fees, and books for the graduate degree chosen. The amount and duration of awards vary by student based on the cost of attendance and the length of the graduate program as well as other scholarships or grants received. The maximum available per student is $50,000 per year and the maximum length is six years.

RHODES SCHOLARSHIPS - The Rhodes Scholarships, the oldest international fellowships, were initiated after the death of Cecil Rhodes in 1902, and bring outstanding students from many countries around the world to the University of Oxford. The first American Scholars were elected in 1904. American Rhodes Scholars are selected through a decentralized process by which regional selection committees choose thirty-two Scholars each year from among those nominated by selection committees in each of the fifty states. Intellectual distinction is a necessary but not a sufficient condition for election to a Rhodes Scholarship. Selection committees are charged to seek excellence in qualities of mind and in qualities of person which, in combination, offer the promise of effective service to the world in the decades ahead. Rhodes Scholars are elected for two years of study at the University of Oxford, with the possibility of renewal for a third year. The scholarships cover all educational costs, a maintenance allowance, costs of travel to and from Oxford, and may include additional grants for research purposes or study-related travel.

HARRY S. TRUMAN SCHOLARSHIPS - The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation was created by an Act of Congress in 1975 to support college juniors with exceptional leadership potential who are committed to careers in government, the nonprofit or advocacy sectors, education or elsewhere in the public service. Approximately 75 scholarships are awarded annually. OSU is eligible to nominate up to four junior levels students annually. The Truman Scholarship provides up to $30,000 in funding to students pursuing graduate degrees in public service fields. Students must be college juniors at the time of selection. The Foundation also provides assistance with career counseling, internship placement, graduate school admissions, and professional development. Scholars are invited to participate in a number of programs: Truman Scholar Leadership Week, The Summer Institute, The Truman Fellows Program, and the Public Service Law Conference. All Candidates should be aware that the Truman Scholarship has a newly instituted service requirement. Scholars are required to work in public service for three of the seven years following completion of a Foundation funded graduate degree program as a condition of receiving Truman funds.

JACOB K. JAVITS FELLOWSHIPS - This program provides fellowships to students of superior academic ability—selected on the basis of demonstrated achievement, financial need, and exceptional promise—to undertake study at the doctoral and Master of Fine Arts level in selected fields of arts, humanities, and social sciences.  Panels of experts appointed by the Javits Fellowship Board (Board) select fellows according to criteria established by the Board. Students must demonstrate financial need by filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The selected fields of study supported by the Javits Fellowship Program are available for your review.  Subject to the availability of funds, a fellow receives the Javits fellowship annually for up to the lesser of 48 months or the completion of their degree. The fellowship consists of an institutional payment (accepted by the institution of higher education in lieu of all tuition and fees for the fellow) and a stipend (based on the fellow's financial need as determined by the measurements of the Federal Student Assistance Processing System. In fiscal year 2007, the institutional payment was $12,627 and the maximum stipend was $30,000. For fiscal year 2008, the maximum stipend will be $30,000, and the institutional payment will be $12,891.
