Both the chart and the principle are named after Vilfredo Pareto (1848-1923), an Italian economist and sociologist. In Release 6.12 and previous releases of SAS/QC software, the keyword GRAPHICS was required in the PROC PARETO statement to specify that the chart be created with a graphics device.
