Managing people can be the toughest, most challenging part of a supervisor's job. To be
successful, a manager or supervisor needs strong "people skills" and expert
knowledge of the law. The Leadership Development Program is designed to provide knowledge
and develop skills in achieving results from our most important resource, "people
power."
Why a Leadership Development Program?
Improving quality has become the number one organizational strategy for competing more
effectively in today's global marketplace. In order to rise to this challenge, supervisors
have one of the toughest jobs in the business--getting results through other people.
Unfortunately, supervisors are not born with the skills and knowledge to perform in this
role. Supervisors must acquire the necessary skills through training and hands-on
experience. Today's laws complicate the task and increase the responsibility; know-how can
make the difference.
The Leadership Development Program is designed specifically to provide supervisors with
the perspectives, knowledge, and techniques necessary to perform more effectively in the workplace.
What are the advantages?
The program is designed for the OSU supervisor. Unlike many "canned" supervisory programs, the OSU
Leadership Development Program addresses issues that pertain to OSU. As a participant,
you will join a select group of supervisors from all areas of campus who desire to improve their job skills and
expand their overall knowledge. You also join a professional network of OSU supervisors who have similar work
concerns and face day-to-day challenges similar to yours.
The program is under continual evaluation to assess its contribution to achieving the mission and goals of Oklahoma
State University. Specific OSU policies and procedures that every supervisor needs to know are addressed.
All classes are held on the Stillwater campus, thus saving time and expense of travel to another location.
How does the program work?
The program consists of required seminars and electives. The 30 hours of required courses focus on basic functions
of the supervisory process; the 20 hours of specially marked electives are selected by you to meet your special needs
and interests. The total 50 hours of training must be completed within a three year period in order to receive your
certificate.
Specific courses are outlined in the Faculty and Staff Development Opportunities brochure,
distributed each semester. We reserve the right to modify curriculum and/or change instructors at any time without
prior notice.
Each participant needs to keep track of the courses taken. When you first enroll, you will be given a notebook with
a cover page to keep a record of the courses taken. After each course taken, document the course title and date completed
on the cover page. Once you have completed the 50 hours of training, send a copy of the cover page to Human
Resources/Training Services, 106 Whitehurst. We will verify your records and order a framed certificate for
presentation showing your successful completion of the program.
How long does it take to complete the program?
Some employees will be able to complete the entire program in one year; however, employees have up to three years to
complete the program requirements.

management styles, cultural etiquette, and quality management.
How much does the program cost?

and courses are billed on an individual basis. Payment is automatically spread over the length of the time you use to
