About Us
Habitat International
Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller. The Fullers were inspired by Clarence Jordan who had established a small community of Christians. It was with Mr. Jordan that the Fullers developed thier idea for "partnership housing" where those in need would work with volunteers to build their houses. Habitat began by building homes at no profit and sold to the homeowners at no interest. Habitat continues to build homes in this way from the Fund for Humanity. In September of 1976 it was decided that Habitat's long term goal would be to serve the world and it officailly became Habitat for Humanity International. Today HFHI has built over 300,000 homes for more than 1.5 million people in more than 3,000 communities around the world. (Taken from http://www.habitat.org/how/historytext.aspx)
Mission Statement
According to the 2004 Habitat for Humanity Annual Report
Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with God and people everywhere, from all walks of life, to develop communities with people in need by building and renovating houses so that there are decent houses in decent communities in which every person can experience God's love and live and grow into all that God intends. (Taken from http://www.habitat.org/support/report/2004/mission.html)
This is the mission statement for Habitat International, but we work for the same reasons as a campus chapter. We work especially with the local chapter located here in Stillwater to pursue these goals through our volunteering at local build cites and raising funds to donate both to Stillwater Habitat and Habitat Internation. We also place particular emphasis on informing our community about the needs of the world and advocating Habitat so that they may know how to help others.
