Friends in Germany - Elke, Udo and Karin

Language Acquisition and Cultural Enrichment for Grades 5 & 6
  • An American student moves to Germany and learns not only the language, but with the help of his good friends-Elke, Udo, and Karin has a good time assimilating the cultural differences.
  • Funded through a Star Schools Grant and independently evaluated, the course was highly rated for its program design.
  • Each of the lessons practices listening and speaking and worksheets are provided for writing short sentences.
  • In addition to language practice, the lessons feature lively video clips filmed in Germany.
  • Students experience "living" in a foreign country-what it's like in a German house: sleeping in a feather bed or breakfasting on rolls, jam, cheese and sausage.
  • Lessons are supported by a teacher's companion guide containing objectives for each lesson, follow-up activities, worksheets with answer keys.
  • There are no prerequisites for the German by Satellite Video Series for Grades 5&6. Basic vocabulary and language structures will be introduced and practiced.
Objectives
  • Students will learn sufficient grammatical structures to master some basic elements of the five areas of language proficiency-speaking, listening, reading, writing, and culture.
  • Students will be able to speak basic phrases and expressions, comprehend short phrases, identify and write learned words and phrases appropriate to the context.
  • Students will form simple statements and questions, give commands and make requests.
Course Content
  • Chapter 1: New Friends at School. Introductions and greetings, talking about school day activities
  • Chapter 2: We're working together. Classroom items, genders of nouns, talking about school day activities
  • Chapter 3: What are you doing? Indicating possession, numbers 0-20
  • Chapter 4: Finally, Recess! Talking about activities, numbers: "tens" up to 100
  • Chapter 5: I'm hungry. Talking about food likes and dislikes, Bingo: numbers 21-100
  • Chapter 6: I'm celebrating my Name Day today. Talking about family, sentences with direct objects
