Dr. Robert Spurrier



Dr. Robert Spurrier is Director Emeritus of The Honors College and Professor Emeritus of Political Science.  In his years on the faculty at OSU, he received numerous awards for outstanding teaching and academic advising, and he really enjoyed teaching honors courses and seminars dealing with law and the American legal system and as well as serving as honors advisor for approximately 100 Honors College students each year.  He is a past president of the National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC), was elected twice to the NCHC Board of Directors, and completed his term as NCHC Secretary at the end of 2012.  Dr. Spurrier was selected as a member of the first class of Fellows of the National Collegiate Honors Council, is one of approximately 30 NCHC Recommended Site Visitors (conducting external reviews of other institutions' honors programs and honors colleges several times a year), and is co-author of NCHC's monograph Assessing and Evaluating Honors Programs and Honors Colleges: A Practical Handbook.  In addition, he originated the "Developing in Honors" workshop for experienced honors professionals and the “Best Honors Administrative Practices” sessions that are regular features of NCHC's national conference each year.  Dr. Spurrier retired from OSU in the summer of 2014 after 42 years of faculty and administrative service at OSU that included 26 years as Honors Director.
