Colorimetry is used to analyze amounts of Cl- and NO3- in an extract. The extract is introduced into a series of tubing where it mixes with chemicals called reagents. The reagents cause colors to form when they react with specific ions such as Cl- and NO3-. The intensity of color formed is directly proportional to the concentration of an ion present. The instrument pictured here is fully computer-automated meaning it runs completely un-aided by a supervising technician.
