The most important  instrument in soil salinity evaluation is the EC (Electrical Conductivity) meter or cell. USDA handbook 60 states that if a saturated paste extract measures 4 dc/m2 it qualifies as saline. So with the use of an EC measurement, a soil can quickly be evaluated as saline or non-saline. The stick is simply dipped into the extract acquired from the soil paste or 1:1 mixture.
