Community Service Work-Study Employer's Guide
Overview of Community Service Work-Study Program
Federal Work-Study (FWS) is a form of financial aid in which students earn their award through work-study employment. While the majority of FWS jobs are on-campus, off-campus jobs are also available through the Community Service FWS program (CSFWS). Off-campus jobs are termed Community Service FWS as employment is restricted to local nonprofit, governmental, and community-based organizations working for the public good. FWS Students earn their awards through an hourly wage attached to the FWS job. They will be available to work until they have either exhausted their award or the academic year ends. Through participation in the program, FWS students are exposed to important social and community issues, learn valuable job skills, and help local organizations better serve the community.
Enrolling as an Employer
To become an active Employer an organization must submit:
- Off-Campus Agreement : Details the rights and responsibilities of both the Employer and the University.
- Off-Campus Payment Plan : Details which portion, if any, the Employer must contribute toward the FWS student's salary.
- Signature Authorization Form : Lists names and signatures of those who are authorized to sign FWS timesheets onbehalf of the Employer.
- Certificate of Worker's Compensation Coverage : Verifies the Employer has a current Worker's Compensation policy.
Requesting Students for Your AgencyTo request a FWS student, an Employer must submit a Job Request Form (Attachment D) to the CSFWS Office. This form will provide a description of the employing agency, job duties, available times, hourly wage, and contact information. Pay RatesAn Employer is free to determine what hourly rate they would like their FWS job to pay. As expected, jobs with higher hourly wages attract a larger number of student applicants. |
