Springer-Verlag's advice to editors and co-authors:

To reach an agreement with all the authors on how to prepare the book we propose the following way:

bullet

The editor proposes an outline of the book and a table of contents, including corresponding numbers of pages per contribution. (see above)

bullet

The table of contents, which has been distributed to all the co-authors, is sent back to the editor, with comments. The co-authors are free to propose further topics, which they think should be included in the book.

bullet

After having reached an agreement on the table of contents, the actualized table of contents is sent to all the co-authors.

bullet

The schedule for the preparation of the manuscript should be discussed in this early stage. The date of submission of the manuscripts and the time frame for revising the manuscripts should be fixed.

bullet

The length of each chapter has to be fixed in advance. The co-authors have to follow the proposed number of pages within a tolerance of a maximum of +/-20 %.

bullet

Every co-author is asked to prepare an extended abstract of his contribution. These extended abstracts are discussed with the editor. Revised fine-tuning of the plan for the individual chapters may result from this discussion.

bullet

The revised extended abstracts are collected by the editor and distributed to all the co-authors. (They will appear on the web-site at this time.) Thus every co-author will be informed of the contributions of the other co-authors in some detail. This will allow for cross-referencing and the avoidance of repeated discussion.

bullet

The co-authors send their manuscript to the editor who will check them and have corresponding discussions with the co-authors.

bullet

It is our aim to give this book the style of a monograph and not of a collection of papers. Therefore it is necessary to homogenize the style of discussion and of figures. The co-editors will place one sample chapter on the website as orientation for style of discussion, the use of references and layout of figures. After the editors have checked the manuscripts and discussed them with the co-authors, they will revise their manuscript to fit into the concept of a book in monograph style.

bullet

If possible, all the co-authors should read and comment on the complete book. The aim should be that every individual author feels as a co-author of the complete book and not only of his contribution.

For a fast publication we ask you to prepare the manuscript in camera-ready form. For this purpose we can supply you with corresponding authors instructions and a Macro for LaTeX. In case you are not familiar with LaTeX please try to get the support of a colleague in formatting your contribution in LaTeX. This is important since a manuscript prepared in LaTeX will look significantly better than in Word. However, should submission in Word be necessary, the co-editors expect to provide a service for conversion of a manuscript to Latex.

Technical hints:

The manuscripts are to be submitted in electronic as well as in paper form.

Figures should be submitted as hard copy and in electronic version. In case of scanned figures, line figures should be scanned with a resolution of 800 dpi, and half tone figures with a resolution of 300 dpi.
