OSU LIST OWNER FAQ

This FAQ will grow as List Owners ask questions OSU List Owner Commands.

How Do I Filter Someone From My List?

Just add to your header:
* Filter= Also,userid1@node1,*@node2,userid3@* etc.

This will keep someone who is a trouble maker or who continually bounces messages from being able to subscribe to your list once you have
deleted them. Another example of the above command:
* FILTER= ALSO,userid@hop-boucner.host

What About Attachments To Listserv E-Mail Messages?

You can attach zipped documents or Word for Windows documents to an e-mail message to a listserv list. They may want the document sent
unencoded, binhexed, zipped, in ascii, etc.

One other warning. The Word Concept virus is being spread in Word for Windows documents via e-mail. Therefore, if you open a Word for
Windows document from an e-mail message into Word for Windows, there is a chance you will get this virus. It seems to adversely affect Word
for Windows operation.

How Can I Make Someone A Quiet Owner?

* OWNER= userid1@domain.edu
* OWNER= QUIET:
* OWNER= userid2@domain.edu

For purposes of LISTSERV, only subscribers receive distributions (assuming they aren't set to NOMAIL) regardless of owner status.

Make sure that NOTIFY= and ERRORS-TO= don't have explicit userid@node pointing to the userid2 owner.

How Can I Moderate a List?

Perhaps the easiest way is to add this command to your list header

* Send=Editor,Hold

Then, all you need to do is Reply to the Request to Post with ok in the message box. This will release the message to the list. Unless you specify
an Editor by userid, the submissions to your list will be sent to the List Owner for approval. Listserv will hold the job for a minimum of seven days.

How Can I Restrict Subscriber Privileges?

Send a command to: listserv@listserv.okstate.edu

In the message box put:

SET listname REVIEW FOR userid@domain.name

The subscriber's postings will be sent to the Editor(s), Moderators(s), or List Owner(s) who can determine whether or not to approve them for
posting to the list.

How Can I Set A Subscriber To MAIL Or NOMAIL?

Send a command to: listserv@listserv.okstate.edu

In the message box put:

SET listname MAIL FOR userid@domain.name

The subscriber will be notified that he has been set to receive individual postings instead of digests; or that he has been set from nomail to mail,
depending on his previous list preferences. You can reverse the above commands and set a person to NOMAIL if you do not want them to
receive postings -- perhaps because their mailbox is full or they make this request because they are going on vacation.

You can also do this quietly, so the person is not notified of the change. You might want to use the QUIET option to change people's header
options. If your List Header has the Subject Tag option defined (example, Subject-Tag=Techwr-L); then you could quietly:

QUIET SET techwr-l SUBJ FOR *@*

And all would get the revised header without being notified of the change. The Subject-Tag=Techwr-L would append the list name in the subject
line of all e-mail messages from the list for better identification by recipients.

How Can I Search for a Topic on a List?

Send a command to: listserv@listserv.okstate.edu

In the message box put:

Search search_string IN listname
