Council Minutes: July 27, 2009

Present: : Dennis Bertholf, Geneva Dugger, Pauline Kopecky, Dave Lewis, Judy Lewis, Zona Noyes, Betty Rutledge, Margaret Scott, JoAnn Seamans, Bob Terry, Steve Tweedie, Esther Winterfelt, Russell Wright, Larry Zirkle

President Russ Wright began the meeting at 1:35 p.m. Zona Noyes moved the agenda be approved; seconded and passed; Margaret Scott moved the June minutes be approved; seconded and passed.

Treasurer Geneva Dugger reported a checking account balance of $7,768.41. Zona moved the treasurer's report be accepted; seconded and passed. Geneva spoke of having problems getting the credit card issued the way it should be (in the Association's name). After discussion, she is going to speak again with the Credit Union, maybe cancel the current one and attempt to get a properly issued one.

Officer/Committee Reports:

a. Communications: JoAnn Seamans reported that the Executive Vice President's office will run the new brochures on their color copier provided the Emeriti Association purchase the paper. Geneva made a motion that we allow JoAnn the purchase of 300 sheets of appropriate paper to run the brochures and that we accept the VP's offer of printing them gratis.

b.Emeriti Ambassadors/Alumni Relations: Russ reported for Sharon Brown that 15 people, in about a day and a half stuffed 8,000 calendars and got them ready to mail. 98 hours were donated this month.

c. Membership: Zona reported 7 retirees have joined as a result of the invitation sent to all new retirees; most recent are Valeta Armstead and John Frost. Zona reported we now have a membership of 560. She also passed out a list of those retiring since 12/31/08, and asked that we call and invite to meetings any of these we know.

d. Nominations: Past President Larry Zirkle is making headway on nominations for next year.

e. Vice President for Activities:Dennis Bertholf reviewed the menu for August First Monday Night Dinner; Rib Eye Steak sandwiches will be served. The program will be presented by Melisa Parkerson, Director of Student Programs for the Alumni Association, speaking of Grandparents University.

Dennis reported that the travel group is still planning to go to Wichita in August and later to Branson.

Dennis also reported that Fran Sorenson, courtesy, had sent several cards due to an unusually large number of deaths and illnesses. Fran thanked Mary Holmes for supplying the cards.

f. OLLI: Margaret Scott reported an e-mail had been sent out about the fall classes, which begin October 6th. She said that Jack Stout has finalized plans for a September trip to the National Weather Station in Norman. A series of basic computer classes will be offered this fall at Meridian Technology to OLLI members (thanks to Ruthann for pursuing that).

g. President's Report: President Wright reminded all officers and committee chairs that a report of the year s work is to be rendered before year s end.

President Wright reported that Larry Jones will replace Norman Durham, whose term expires December 31, 2010. Russ will contact another councilor about being replaced since he has not attended Council meetings. Larry Perkins will serve on the University Committee on Flexible Compensation Benefits through May 31, 2011. Larry will fill the vancancy left with the death of Bob Oehrtman.

h. White Woods: Esther Winterfelt said that a meeting had been held recently to discuss the Indemnification insurance. The board will continue to meet although there is no activity at this time.

The next Council meetings will be August 31st and September 28th. Upcoming Emeriti Dinners will be held on August 3rd and September 8th. The meeting was adjourned at 2:20pm.
