Birthday Note:
Beyond Nine Decades
The Emeriti Association would like to send birthday wishes to Leroy Fischer, who celebrated his 92nd birthday on May 19th.
Volunteer Opportunities
Plentiful in May
Through May 25th, including commencement, 20 Emeriti volunteers have served 208 hours.

The following people served as Emeriti ambassadors for commencement ceremonies: Darrel & Barbara Baker, Ken Bell, Dennis & Loretta Bertholf, Pauline Kopecky, Margaret Scott, Russ Wright, and Larry & Nelda Zirkle. Special thanks go out to you all for assisting with graduation.

Holocaust Exhibit Is
OLLI/Emeriti Tour
OLLI@OSU/OSU Emeriti Association members will be traveling to the Oklahoma Science Museum on June 12 to view the Holocaust Memorial Museum Exhibit. Call the Stout’s with reservations/questions at 372-6966.

In Memoriam
Joe Hughes: 1940- 2009
Joe H. Hughes of Stillwater died Monday, April 13, 2009. He was born on October 27, 1940 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. He attended Clemson University and majored in animal husbandry.

In 1959, his first year at Clemson, he attended the National FFA Convention where he was elected Southern Regional Vice-President.

In 1963, Joe came to OSU where he did graduate study in animal nutrition under the guidance of Dr. Robert Totusek. Hughes completed his M.S. degree in 1967 and his PH.D in 1971. Graduate studies were interrupted by the Viet Nam war.

He joined the army and retired as Lt. Colonel in 1970. In 1971, Hughes was hired as the first Oklahoma State Extension Youth Livestock Specialist, coordinating a variety of animal programs for both 4-H and FFA. He held this position until his retirement in 1999.

Joe is survived by wife, Lynn, a brother, sister, and numerous nieces and nephews. The Joe H. Hughes and Lynn Hughes endowed scholarship has been established at the OSU Foundation.

In Memoriam:
Ardith Hackman Weibel - 1920-2009
Ardith Weibel, Stillwater, died May 13, 2009. Ardith was born in 1920 in Lincoln, NB. She was the widow of Dale Weibel, former professor of agronomy, who specialized in grain research at OSU.

Ardith was especially known for her creations of gorgeous formals and prom dresses. She once made 50 capes for OSU’s Angel Flight for the year the Flight marched in President Nixon’s second inaugural parade.

Ardith and Dale traveled extensively in Puerto Rico and India in connection with his grain research. Ardith established a scholarship at OSU in Dale’s honor to benefit international students.

She is survived by four daughters and their families, a sister and a brother.

Roger E. Koeppe 1922 - 2009
Roger E. Koeppe, OSU Professor and Head of Biochemistry until his retirement in 1990, died on Saturday, May 16, 2009. Roger was born May 2, 1922 to missionary parents as they served in Kulangsu, Amoy, China, for the Reformed Church of America.

His formal schooling included home schooling by his mother while in China, one year in the USA before returning to China where he attended the Shanghai American School. Due to the China-Japan War the school closed for one year.

Roger returned to the USA to graduate from Central High School near Rochester, NY. Undergraduate training in chemistry was obtained at Hope College in Holland, Michigan where he graduated cum laude in 1944. Graduate education was at the University of Illinois where he earned his Ph.D. in 1950.

His extensive biography included post doctoral work at the University of Tennessee Medical School, in Memphis. In 1959, Roger joined the Department of Biochemistry at OSU. In 1963, he was appointed the fourth head of the department.

Dr. Koeppe received many awards during his career, most notably, the 1989 Oklahoma Scientist of the Year, by the Oklahoma Academy of Science.

Roger is survived by his wife, Norma; their five children; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and, one brother and one sister. A scholarship has been established in honor of Dr. Koeppe at the OSU Foundation. A memorial service will be held later in the summer.
