Undergraduate Programs: Occupational Education

Two options, both of which lead to a bachelor of science degree in Technical and Industrial Education (TIED) are offered in the Occupational Education program. The certification option is for students interested in teaching technical education in the secondary schools. The non-certification option is for those interested in technical education to adults.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the TIED non-certification option are in demand as instructors in career and technical programs at community colleges, technical centers, and at on-the-job training programs in the private sector. The TIED non-certified option is designed primarily for graduates of technical programs in technical institutes and community colleges. Qualified students from pre-professional programs may be accepted with advanced standing. In addition, students desiring to prepare for careers in technical education may enter the program directly from high school and complete their technical major requirements at Oklahoma State University.

Graduates of the TIED certified option are in demand to serve as teachers, supervisors , and coordinators for career, trade, and industrial education programs. Plans of study are available for those who wish to qualify for teaching under the approved state plan for vocational departments of high schools and area career and technology centers (formerly called vocational-technicalcenters). Some of the many fields included are: automotive technology, aviation technology, commercial art, photography, computer assisted drafting, electronics, computer networking, computer repair, and television production.
The bachelor’s degree is considered to be appropriate preparation for graduate studies. The OSU College of Education offers master’s and doctorate degrees in occupational education and related areas.

Technology

Occupational Education students learn how to integrate telecommunications and technology in their fields. They learn many computer-related teaching skills such as creating computer-assisted presentations and preparing distance learning courses via the internet.

Getting the Job

The College is very successful in assisting students in finding jobs upon graduation. The OSU Career Services, the COE career consultant, the academic advisement staff, and faculty communicate regularly with school districts and companies seeking to hire OSU College of Education graduates.

Scholarships

Last year more than $250,000 in scholarships were awarded to students in the College of Education. Some scholarships are set aside for students majoring in Occupational Education. In addition to endowed scholarships from the college, students are sometimes awarded scholarships from state or national professional organizations. Students may also apply for fee waivers, college workstudy, federal grants and loans, and employment opportunities on campus.
