Career Opportunities
The master's program provides opportunities for employment in public school teaching with certification requirements met. Other opportunities include private school teaching and working in community agencies, homebound instruction, and hospital facilities. Students wishing teaching careers at any of these levels need to complete a Residency Year Program during their first year of public school employment.
Getting Experience
Every student enrolled in the masters program has available a wide range of field experiences before graduating. Some of these experiences are required and others are optional. Practicum is required at the master's level. Other opportunities for experience include tutoring, public school participation, and community agency work, all of which are available and encouraged.
Technology
Students learn how to integrate telecommunications and technology into their academic coursework and professional activities. Opportunities are available in experiences to prepare for working with students in technology such as setting up computer assisted presentations, web sites, and internet distance learning coursework
Accreditation
The special education program is nationally recognized by the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC). The Professional Education Unit at Oklahoma State University is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.
Student Organizations
The Student Education Association provides an opportunity for preservice educators in any program to interact and be affiliated with the national and state organizations. Opportunities to attend conferences are made possible through these organizations.
Scholarships
Last year more than $250,000 in scholarships were awarded to education students. Other scholarships are available for returning students, minority students, and a wide variety of other students. State and national professional organizations offer scholarships which can be accessed through student advisement and the financial office. Fee waivers, college work study, federal grants and loans, and employment opportunities on and off campus are also available.
Graduate Programs of Interest to Undergraduate Students
Students who have completed or will complete undergraduate teacher education programs have the opportunity to complete a master's level degree program in special education within another year as a full time student or within four summer sessions. These programs are also available at the OSU Center in Tulsa.
