I am an Associate Professor of curriculum studies. I have been a public school teacher in three different settings: 8th grade and high school social studies teacher in a rural community whose secondary school graduated about 50 students each spring; gifted and talented program teacher in a large suburban district where I worked with students from 1st grade through high school and where I set up a community mentorship program for individual high school students with community members working in fields of interest to the students; and a much less affluent suburban district where I taught high school social studies courses for several years.
Currently I teach graduate courses in Stillwater and Tulsa, including Curriculum Issues, Pedagogical Research, Curriculum Leadership, Middle School Curriculum, Secondary Curriculum, Media Literacy Across the Curriculum, and School Reform.
My research interests center on teacher research, teacher autonomy, and media literacy. I will be on sabbatical in Fall 2008 collecting data on existing teacher inquiry communities and participating teachers' experiences of leadership and advocacy. A teacher consultant and resources co-director for the OSU Writing Project, I am also co-chair of the National Writing Project's special-focus network devoted to Teacher Inquiry Communities and served a 3-year term on the Executive Council of the American Association for Teaching and Curriculum.
My honors include having been named Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, and recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award at Oklahoma State University. Along with my colleague Gretchen Schwarz, I co-edited a yearbook for the National Society for the Study of Education titled Media Literacy: Transforming Curriculum and Teaching and wrote a chapter titled "Critical Media Literacy in Secondary Schools" for The Handbook of Research on Teaching Literacy Through the Communicative and Visual Arts, Vol. II. I have also published in the Journal of Curriculum and Teaching Dialogue, the Journal of Early Childhood Teacher Education, the Journal of Balanced Reading Instruction, Scholar-Practitioner Quarterly, and the Journal of Curriculum Discourse and Dialogue.
