Master's in Counseling Program

Letter of Welcome

Dear Prospective Student,

I would like to introduce our master's program in Counseling at Oklahoma State University. Our master's program is currently the only counseling program in the state of Oklahoma that is accredited by CACREP (Counseling and Counseling Related Educational Programs). We offer two options in our program: School Counseling and Community Counseling.

Our Community counseling option is a 60-graduate-credit-hour program designed to meet the Oklahoma State licensure requirements for licensure as a professional counselor. It is important to note that counseling licensure for half of the states in the nation is now 60 credits. The length of our program along with CACREP accreditation make a degree from OSU very portable across state lines. The School Counseling option is a 57-graduate-credit-hour program designed to meet Oklahoma state certification for school counselors and is also CACREP accredited. While most of our students are from Oklahoma, we do welcome students from other states as well as international students.

Our program offers a variety of counseling training opportunities and experiences. We believe that you will find that our program provides excellent training for becoming a counselor in a variety of settings (e.g., college and university counseling centers, community mental health centers, hospitals, and schools). We strongly believe in matching training experiences to the interests and skills of our students. We offer a number of different practica and internship settings for students to gain counseling experiences with diverse clients. At Oklahoma State University, we work hard to ensure that students' learning experiences combine both the support and challenge that they need to grow and learn.

The majority of our students admitted to the counseling master's program finish in about 2 years, assuming they take approximately 9-12 hours per semester of graduate coursework. However, students do have the option of taking courses on a part-time basis. We offer courses in both OSU Stillwater and Tulsa campuses.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any inquiries about our program.

Sincerely,

Hugh C. Crethar, PhD
