COE Mourns Dean Emeriti Dr. Helmer Sorenson
 |
In 1964, Dr. Helmer Sorenson joined the Oklahoma A & M faculty as an associate professor of education and soon became the Associate Dean of the OSU School of Education. He ultimately became the Dean of the College of Education and served from 1964-1972. Dr. Sorenson was instrumental in rebuilding the doctoral program in education administration, recruiting faculty during a critical period of expansion, and consolidating education preparation programs in business, engineering and industrial arts into the College. After he left OSU, he served on the faculty of the University of Nebraska as acting chair of Educational Administration and Higher Education and chaired a number of visiting accreditation committees on other campuses for the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education. The Sorensons returned to Stillwater and became important friends and supporters of the College of Education. Dr. Sorenson was inducted into the COE Hall of fame in 2001.
Services for Dr. Helmer Sorenson will be Tuesday, 10:30 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, 400 West 7th, in Stillwater.
