COE Facilitates Algebra for All Institute on August 26 & 27

Cherokee County teachers convened to participate in the first two days of an Algebra for All  Institute. which was facilitated by the College of Education’s Susan Stansberry, and Gayla Hudson, and College of Arts and Sciences’, Jim Choike. The Institute is a collaborative effort between OSU College of Education and the College of Arts and Sciences faculty.

This learning opportunity is funded by a No Child Left Behind Grant through the Oklahoma Regents for Higher Education.  Choike, Stansberry, and Hudson facilitated the professional development to 6-12 mathematics teachers.  Teacher-trainers, Linda Goeller (Keys) and Michael Porter (Stillwater) presented to the group to share classroom strategies to improve student learning.

Project goals are: (1) provide training on strategies in content, pedagogy, equity, and assessment that are effective in helping students learn algebra at high levels; (2) illustrate how student assessment information can be used to make instructional planning more effective; and (3) train teachers on strategies that promote personal professional growth by means of leadership, peer coaching, and self-reflection training.  Project goals will be accomplished with a four-day Institute scheduled with a two day initial meeting in August and a second training of two days in September.

Extensive support during the academic year is provided by means of the USDOE-funded “Algebra for All” web site.
