College of Education to Induct Five Hall of Fame

Five outstanding individuals will be inducted into the Oklahoma State University College of Education’s Seventh Annual Hall of Fame on June 17 at the Wes Watkins Center for International Trade Development in Stillwater.

The highest honor bestowed by the college will recognize Dr. Jeanne L. Agnew, OSU emeritus professor of mathematics; Dr. Isabel Baker, OSU alumna and professor emeritus of Northeastern State University; Dr. Clayton A. Morgan, founder of the National Clearinghouse of Rehabilitation Training Materials; Dr. Cindy Ross, OSU alumna and president of Cameron University; and Coach Eddie Sutton, OSU alumnus and head coach of the OSU Cowboys basketball team.

The late Dr. Agnew, a naturalized citizen who was born in Ontario, served on the OSU faculty from 1953 until her retirement in 1984, and directed the dissertations for the Ed.D. degrees of 18 graduate students. Assisted by Dr. Marvin Keener, she created an innovative method of teaching through the use of mathematical modeling. She was the co-author of two books, and following her retirement created two award-winning correspondence courses for the OSU Division of Independent Study.

Dr. Baker, of Tahlequah, retired in 1994 as a professor emeritus at Northeastern State University where she had taught for more than 12 years and after serving public education for more than 43 years. An OSU alumna, she received her master’s degree in 1954 and her Ed.D. in 1972, both in elementary education. She served on the OSU A&M Board of Regents from 1991-99, and was influential in the renovation of Willard Hall as the new home for the College of Education. She was named Oklahoma Mother of the Year in 1978, and was inducted into the Oklahoma Women’s Hall of Fame by the Oklahoma Commission on the Status of Women.

Dr. Morgan came to OSU in 1958 to develop a vocational rehabilitation counselor training program, and served as a professor of psychology and coordinator for the vocational rehabilitation counselor education program until his retirement in1984. In 1961 he created the National Clearinghouse of Rehabilitation Training Materials, which became federally funded in 1971. He served for many years on the Oklahoma Governor’s Committee on the Employment of the Handicapped. He received the first Distinguished Career Service Award presented by the National Council on Rehabilitation Education.

Dr. Ross, an alumna, was named president of Cameron University in Lawton three years ago. In 1990 she was named associate vice chancellor with the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education and in 1994 was named executive vice chancellor for academic affairs, the chief academic officer for the state system. Prior to that, she worked for 12 years at OSU, including serving as director of Academic Affairs Administration for OSU from 1984-89. She received a bachelor’s of university studies in 1983, and a master’s degree in 1986 and Ed.D. in 1989, both in higher education administration.

Sutton, a native of Bucklin, Kan., received his B.S. degree in 1958 and his master's degree in 1959 from OSU, both in secondary education. He was named head coach of his alma mater in 1990. With more than 780 career victories, Sutton ranks second among active Division I coaches and sixth all-time. Under Coach Sutton, the Cowboys have claimed two regular-season conference crowns and three league tournament titles, including back-to-back Big 12 championships in 2004 and 2005. He has led the Pokes to postseason play in 14 of his 15 years at the helm, with 13 NCAA tournaments and two Final Four appearances. He was the first coach in history to lead four different schools (Creighton, Arkansas, Kentucky and OSU) to the NCAA tournament.

Tickets for the ceremony are $50 per person, and seating will be limited. For more information, contact the Education Outreach office at (405) 744-6254 or (800) 765-8933, by e-mail at education.outreach@okstate.edu.
