Oklahoma State University College of Education alumna Kristy VanDorn, who was recently a finalist for Oklahoma's Teacher of the Year, has been named the College's 2009 Rising Star Award winner. The Rising Star Award annually recognizes young alumni whose lives and achievements demonstrate promise of future leadership and bring distinction to the College.
VanDorn will be formally presented the Rising Star Award and will speak to current College of Education students at the 36th annual COE Scholarships and Awards Banquet on Oct. 23 at the Wes Watkins Center on the OSU campus.
"It is a privilege to honor Kristy VanDorn as our 2009 Rising Star," College of Education Dean Pamela Fry said. "In her young career, she has proven to be an outstanding and innovative science teacher and I know she will serve as an inspiration to our current students in the College."
"I am proud to be an OSU graduate," VanDorn says. "The honors that have come to me this year are a direct result of the inspiring teachers I had at OSU."
A third generation educator, VanDorn teaches eighth grade science at Deer Creek Middle School in Edmond. She was one of 12 finalists for Oklahoma's 2009 Teacher of the Year. Prior to her current appointment, VanDorn taught in the Putnam City and Stillwater Public school districts. She is a tw-time OSU graduate with a bachelor's degree in elementary education (middle level science option) and a master's degree in natural and applied sciences. She also has experience in higher education as a teacher specialist and professional development instructor at OSU.
VanDorn serves as the Deer Creek Public Schools New Teacher/Mentor District Coordinator. She is also pursuing National Board Certification and received a scholarship from Education Leadership Oklahoma to help support her efforts. VanDorn has twice been nominated for a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science (2005 and 2009).
VanDorn also coaches softball, basketball and track at Deer Creek Middle School and serves as the sponsor for the school's environmental club.
