STILLWATER, Okla. (Oct. 1, 2007) -- Bryan L. Carter has been selected as the 2007 recipient of the Oklahoma State University College of Education Rising Star Award.
The Rising Star Award annually recognizes College of Education alumni for outstanding and significant professional accomplishments during the first 10 years after obtaining a bachelor’s degree.
Cater will be formally presented the Rising Star Award at the 34th annual COE Scholarship and Awards Banquet on October 26 inside the Conoco Phillips Alumni Center on the OSU campus. A limited number of tickets to the event are available by calling Pamela Reding at (405) 744-8933.
A 1998 graduate of OSU with a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education, Carter currently serves as the senior pastor of Concord Church in Dallas, Texas. After joining the church as Associate Pastor of Discipleship in 2000, Carter was elevated to senior pastor in October 2003. The congregation has seen significant growth during Carter’s tenure. Under his leadership, Concord’s membership has increased by more than 1,000 to over 4,500. In addition, he is also currently pursuing a Masters of Theology at Dallas Theological Seminary.
In 2006, Carter was listed among High Impact African American Churches and Leaders. He also received the Outstanding Texan Award from the Texas Legislative Black Caucus in 2007.
Carter’s current affiliations include: Harmony Community Development Corporation (President); H.I.S. Bridgebuilders (Vice President); E.K. Bailey Ministries (Vice President); African American Pastors Coalition of Dallas, Texas (Director of Membership); Mentoring Brother to Brother (Board Member); Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity; Oklahoma State University Alumni Association.
Carter is certified to teach both science and math at the secondary level in the state of Oklahoma and has received a Lifetime Teaching Certificate in the state of Texas. He taught in the Fort Worth (Texas) Independent School District at Dunbar Middle School from 1998 to 2000. While serving in that position, Carter was selected the Fort Worth ISD Teacher of the Year for 1999-2000 and earned the Sallie Mae First Class Teacher Award in 1998-1999.
“Bryan proved to be a well-rounded individual while studying at Oklahoma State,” Dr. Katye Perry, associate professor of educational studies at OSU, said. “He served as president of the African-American Student Association, Minority Educators of Tomorrow and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. He was also the Founder and Director of OSU Project SUCCESS and chaired the Big 12 Council on Black Student Government.”
Carter, a native of Oklahoma City, and his wife, the former Stephanie Sadberry, have two daughters, Kaitlyn and Kennedy.
