OSU GEAR UP
is a national five- year partnership grant that aims to accelerate and
follow the academic achievement of historically underrepresented students
so that increasing numbers will experience academic success. We encourage
the students to complete high school and enroll in college or a technical
program.
Tulsa Public
Schools (TPS) in partnership with Oklahoma State University and
others aims to serve over 2,000 TPS students during the duration of
the grant by providing them with mentoring, tutoring, and other support
services.
Most students began
GEAR UP in the 7th grade and attended one of five target middle schools
located in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
OSU GEAR UP is in
its fifth year. The students are in the 11th grade, attending one of
four Tulsa public high schools.

A
FEW YEARS AGO
|
|
|
|
An
Idea was tossed
Into the air, with
Lots of bridges to cross
|
To
educate children
No matter the cost
So some day they will say
Hey, I am the Boss!
|
| |
|
A
certain structure
Was needed, a certain link
That would bring.worlds together
Hunchos, to think |
To
deal with mood swings
No matter how wild
Speakers came out and spoke
To each parent and to each child |
| |
|
They
scratched and clawed
For a third point at the table
But for months on end
A decision they were unable |
To
nurture and to find
What our children longed to be
Trips were scheduled monthly
To different colleges and universities |
| |
|
We
need a link
To close the gap apparent
What better resource than
Those known as parents |
If
as a parent
It was further education you seek
Programs were offered for you
Certain days of the week |
| |
|
A
triangle dynamic
Was introduced aloud
Teachers, students, now parents
A formula so proud |
Never
a door closed
Though goals were set
Information explained
And guidelines met |
| |
|
The
chance at further knowledge
No matter what In your life's cup
So they, gathered once rnore and named
This group of theirs--GEAR UP |
5th
thru 9th grades
It's here where we focused
So as our babies grew up
Our love they would trust |
| |
|
Gaining
Early Awareness and
Readiness for Undergraduate Programs the means
Of this super powerful structure
Now let's name our teams |
Everything
in tow
All guidelines laid
A title for our parents
GEAR UP Parent Partners made |
| |
|
Six
grammar schools brought together
To voice and exchange
Ideas for information
No matter the range |
Our
goal is so simple
Just your time we ask
No hidden agendas
No hidden costs behind the mask |
| |
|
Fiske,
Dumas, Wadsworth
McCosh and Carnegie
All brought together
Not forgetting Fermi |
To
work together
To make our presence felt
All this under the mastermind
Of our good friends at Roosevelt |
| |
|
One
high school brought in
Not to be left in the dark
A central neighborhood school
Known as Hyde Park |
All
this happening
Because someone with a brain
Thought to pull a few strings
And make education for all, easier to obtain. |
| |
|
All
these fine facilities
Gathered on a board like pawns
And given the ultimate title
GEAR UP cluster of Woodlawn |
