The ubiquitous use of e-mail for both formal and informal communication has led to new challenges for knowledge workers who are expected to process them in a timely manner in addition to performing their regular tasks. We present an exploratory approach based on stochastic dynamic programming techniques for deriving optimal email processing policies to mitigate the detrimental effects of e-mail overload on the efficiency of knowledge workers.
