ETM 5121 - Capstone to Strategy, Technology, and Integration - Part 1
1 Credit Hour

Prerequisite: Enrolled in the next-to-last full semester of the MSETM program or consent of instructor
(normally  taken in next-to-last semester)
This is the first part of the capstone and the second credit hour of the creative component requirement. Students present a proposal for a project that they plan to complete for the ETM 5131 course. This project is intended to make substantive use of MSETM course material, and to be a notable and relevant contribution to the student's organization. Students also participate in the formal critique and discussion of other proposals. In addition, readings and discussions are assigned based upon current business events and areas perceived by faculty as needing additional emphasis. The course will help tie together the "big picture" involved in engineering and technology management.

  • Identifying the roles of planning and strategy, structures and processes (organization), people, tools and measurements, and how they all fit together.

  • Preparing a plan for a particular organization's improvement in:

    • Identifying and acting on strategic issues
    • Forecasting, selecting, and strategically managing appropriate technologies

    • Planning, scheduling, and integrating technology into timely competitive products

    • Building, organizing, and motivating a technical team and integrating its skills, knowledge, and tools with all functions in an organization.

    • Managing an organization's intellectual capabilities and properties

  • Making "optimal" decisions on the fast track from concept-to-market in a particular organization
