ISA Leads Consortium of
Universities
Planning Master’s Degree Programs
ISA’s
Executive Board established an ISA Master’s Degree Consortium that
will conduct a distance education Master’s degree program in
instrumentation, systems and automation at various universities.
Two
universities are presently participating in the consortium, Indiana
State University and Oklahoma State University. The consortium
grew out of a task force appointed by 2000 ISA-president Dr. Perry
Grady, current Past-President.
The
task force considered how ISA, in conjunction with universities could
promote the development of a Master’s Degree Program in
Instrumentation, Systems and Automation.
The
Distance Education Master’s Degree Program was proposed to allow for
broad participation by the universities and prospective students.
The
Distance Education Consortium provides several key benefits to
participating universities, including the ability to reach and serve a
much broader student population with a wider array of curriculum
options.
ISA’s
promotion and support of the consortium will help provide more
visibility and stature to the participating schools.
A key objective of ISA’s involvement in the Consortium is to
attract engineers and technologists to careers in the instrumentation ,
systems, and automation fields.
The
Consortium promotes career development and recognition of professionals
engaged in instrumentation, systems and automation.
A
bachelors’ degree is the highest degree held by approximately 35% of
ISA’s membership. This means that about 14,000 ISA members could potentially
have an interest in pursuing an advanced degree in instrumentation,
systems and automation. An
option to pursue this degree via a distance education program increases
the pool of prospective applicants and provides greater flexibility for
prospective participants. ISA
will serve as the hub of the continually expanding consortium consisting
of Master’s level program from a number of institutions.
Indiana State University proposes a Master of Science in
Electronics and Computer Technology: Instrumentation, Systems and
Automation Concentration. Oklahoma State University proposes a Master of
Science in Control Systems engineering.
The ISA Consortium Executive Committee, with members representing
ISA and each participating university, will serve in an approval and
oversight capacity for institutions wishing to join the consortium.
