Master’s Degree Programs

Master of Science (MS) Degree

The MS degree has three options:

·        The thesis option requires the completion of 30 semester credit hours, including a 6 credit-hour thesis.

·        The creative component–independent study (CC-IS) option requires the completion of 33 semester credit hours, including a 3 credit-hour independent study project.

·        The creative component-course work (CC-CW) option requires the completion of 33 semester credit hours of course work.

All MS options require the selection of a specialty area.  The department currently supports a variety of courses in six specialty areas.  These are

·        Engineering Management

·        Manufacturing Systems

·        Operations Research

·        Quality & Reliability

·        Facilities/Energy & Environmental Management

·        Enterprise Modeling/Supply Chain Systems.

For each specialty area, a set of courses is specified as the core group and another set of courses is specified as the supporting group.  All program options require the student to take at least 3 courses from the Core Group list in their specialty area and earn a grade of B or better in each course.  The program options also require that the student take at least 5 courses (for the thesis option), 6 courses (for the CC-IS option), or 7 courses (for the CC-CW option) from the combined core and supporting courses.

The remaining courses on an MS plan of study are graduate elective courses selected with the advisor’s approval.  With regard to the level of courses, each MS plan of study must include at least 21 hours of IE&M courses at the 5000 level or above.

Master of Industrial Engineering and Management (MIEM) Degree

The MIEM degree is a graduate professional degree.  The degree requires the completion of 33 semester credit hours, including a 6 credit-hour off-campus internship in industry.  Admission into the MIEM requires graduation from an ABET accredited engineering curriculum.
