Course Descriptions

Supervisory Skills II (12 hours)
This two-day course takes the subject matter covered in Supervisory Skills I to a more in-depth level that actually deals with specific types of situations. Procedures for handling employee evaluations, the interview process, and record keeping are just three of the topics covered in this course.

Basic Surveying (16 hours)
This course covers the fundamentals of surveying as they apply to road and bridge construction and maintenance. Horizontal measurement of distance and angles along with differential leveling are addressed in the classroom and in the field using surveying equipment.

Advanced Surveying (24 hours) 
This course further develops on the skills learned in the basic course and applies them to actual road and bridge plans in a field environment.

Testing for Soil Properties (16 hours)
This course covers soil testing for their engineering properties. Sieve analysis, Atterburg limits, Proctors and nuclear density testing are discussed and practiced by the students in the laboratory. Emphasis will be placed on how these test can be used to improve the quality of county roads.

Intro to MS Windows, Word and Excel
This course provides an introduction to the Microsoft (MS) Windows 98 Operating System, MS Word 2000 word processor and Excel 2000 spreadsheet software. Students are provided hands-on experience in a computer lab and will learn how to effectively use many of the features of these products.

Work Zone Traffic Control (8 hours) 
This course covers what is required to comply with Chapter VI of the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control (MUTCD). After completion of the course, students have a good understanding of how traffic control wshould be set up in work zones to protect themselves and the motoring public.
