ADMISSION TO THE GRADUATE PROGRAM


Procedure

The Botany Department offers the Master of Science degree in Botany and the Ph.D. in Plant Sciences and in Environmental Sciences. Applicants for advanced degree programs should submit to the Graduate College:

 

International students should also submit results of the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). Minimum TOEFL scores are 550 for M.S. applicants and 570 for Ph.D. applicants. Prospective students should also correspond directly with faculty members whose research interests parallel their own. Information on faculty research areas may be found here.

Deadlines

To insure fill consideration for admission for the fall semesters, application materials should be submitted by the last working day in February. To insure full consideration for admission for spring semesters, application materials should be submitted by the last working day in September of the preceding year. Late applications may also be considered in special circumstances. Applicants will be notified of their admission status approximately one month after the deadline. .

Financial Assistance

The Botany Department offers Teaching Assistantships and Research Assistantships on a competitive basis (for current stipend levels, contact the Department directly). Students on Teaching or Research Assistantships also receive waiver of all out-of-state tuition. Students may also qualify for Dean's Fee Waiver grants, which pay all tuition for Oklahoma residents, and departmental fee waiver grants, which pay approximately 50% of in-state tuition.  Fees vary for residents and nonresidents of Oklahoma, and for graduate and undergraduate courses.

Graduate students are also encouraged to compete for OSU Foundation Endowed Graduate Fellowships, which provide supplemental funding for up to three years. Students whose research involves collaboration with the S.R. Noble Research Foundation in Ardmore, OK may also receive S.R. Noble Graduate Student Fellowships.

Graduate students can apply for modest funding for research and travel from the James K. McPherson Memorial Fund, which is administered by the Department of Botany.
