The Department of Speech Communication
Oklahoma State University
Stillwater, Oklahoma
Undergraduate Requirements
The field of speech communication has grown enormously and offers a variety of vocational and professional opportunities. To help fill the increasing demand for communication specialists, Oklahoma State University has developed a complete curriculum in either of two degree options: Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science.
Both options require SPCH 2713 and 46 hours (37 hours of Speech Communication, and 9 hours of upper division, non speech hours). Because of the Foreign Language Requirement, The B.A. provides for 17 hours of electives, whereas the the B.S. provides for 27 hours of electives.
The emphasis on both degrees is on the practical applications of principles, concepts, and techniques of speech communication. The speech communication major, however, does more than provide students with practical information. It also gives them a broad social and cultural background for their practical skills thus enabling them to see their discipline in relationship to the world around them.
