The ability to communicate with others is fundamental to all human activity.
Success in work and personal relationships depends on the ability to
understand others and to be understood. In fact, recent research shows that
communication skills are the most important factor in determining business
success. The Speech Communication Department focuses on human
interactions at the public, interpersonal, group, and organizational levels.
The program prepares you for a wide range of careers in business and
industry, educational, government, and service organizations. It is also
excellent preparation for law school, MBA programs, and other professional
degree programs. If you enjoy working with people, speech communication
may be just what you are looking for.
APPLIED NATURE
Students can earn credits for specific supervised communication projects
in organizational settings through practicum courses, and every course
taught in the department has project assignments where students put the
theories they are learning into practice.
NATIONAL RECOGNITION
The department has long been recognized as a national leader in the
development of communication practicums. We are one of only two
communication departments in the nation named as a model program
in human resource development by the American Society for Training
and Development.
PERSONAL ATTENTION
Teaching and advising are central to the department. Students matter,
and you will work closely with a faculty that knows you and cares about
you. Speech Communication majors are a small and supportive group
who are learning and growing together.
