LANGUAGES: ANCIENT
GREEK AND LATIN

COURSE SEQUENCE IN GREEK: 1113 (Alternate Fall Semesters), 1223 (Alternate Spring Semesters), 2113 (Alternate Fall Semesters), 2213 (Alternate Spring Semesters), 3330 (Up to 9 hours total possible in 3330), FLL 4000 (Independent Study).
COURSE SEQUENCE IN LATIN: 1113 (Fall), 1223 (Spring), 2113 (Fall), 2213 (Spring), 3330 (Up to 9 hours total possible in 3330), FLL 4000 (Independent Study).
MINOR: 20 hours starting with 1113 or 15 hours starting with 1223 or 10 hours starting with 2113. GPA of 2.5 with no grade below "C" in upper-division courses.
MINOR IN CLASSICAL STUDIES: 12 hours in an ancient language, plus 9 hours of approved coursework in ancient culture. Contact Dr. Epstein, 301F Gundersen.
ANCIENT AND MEDIEVAL STUDIES CERTIFICATE: 10 hours or equivalent in an ancient language, plus 18 hours in approved courses in ancient studies. Contact Dr. Eldevik, 314 M.
The A & S foreign language requirement may be satisfied by taking the three-course (9 hour) sequence of 1113, 1223, 2113 in either Latin or Greek.
GREEK 1113. ELEMENTARY CLASSICAL GREEK I (Alternate Fall Semesters)
If you have had absolutely no Greek before; if you've never
studied any language before, this is the place to start. You will begin
from the beginning to learn the vocabulary and grammar of ancient Greek,
the same language used by Homer, Plato and the New Testament writers. To
get a good start in the language, you should also plan on taking Greek
1223 the following semester.
GREEK 1223. ELEMENTARY CLASSICAL GREEK II (Alternate Spring Semesters)
A continuation of Greek 1113.
GREEK 2113.
ELEMENTARY CLASSICAL GREEK III (Alternate Fall
Semesters)
You will complete the grammar of Ancient Greek. Completion
of this course satisfies the A & S Foreign Language requirement.
GREEK 2213. INTERMEDIATE READINGS (Alternate Spring Semesters)
The Apology of Plato is read during this semester.
GREEK 3330. ADVANCED READINGS
You and the professor will decide together what to read.
This small class can easily accommodate your personal interests. You should
also count on doing research and writing in this course. Be sure to contact
the professor during the preceding semester.
FLL 4000.3 SPECIAL STUDIES IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE: GREEK
For anyone who desires special coursework beyond the level
of a minor and would like to pursue topics in literature and philosophy.
Contact instructor before enrolling in this course.
LATIN 1113.
ELEMENTARY LATIN I (Fall)
If you have never had Latin or any other language before; if you've tried
before but have never gotten very far, this is where you start. You will
begin from zero to learn the vocabulary and grammar of ancient Latin, the
language of Julius Caesar, Marcus Tullius Cicero and Catullus. To get a
good start in the language, you should also plan on taking Latin 1223 the
following semester.
LATIN 1223. ELEMENTARY LATIN II (Spring)
You will continue the grammar that you began in 1113.
LATIN 2113. ELEMENTARY LATIN III (Fall)
You will complete the grammar and begin to read Latin authors. Completion of this course satisfies the A & S foreign language requirement.
LATIN 2213. INTERMEDIATE READINGS (Spring)
Continuation of 2113. Although this course is scheduled to
meet at a definite hour, it is often possible to reschedule. If you have
a conflict, please check with the professor; this is generally a small
class with much personal attention, so we should be able to accommodate
you.
LATIN 3330. ADVANCED READINGS IN LATIN
This is a small class in which the students and the teacher
choose the texts to be read together. Please contact the professor during
the preceding semester to arrange schedule, books, etc.
FLL 4000.5 SPECIAL STUDIES IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE: LATIN
For anyone who desires special coursework beyond the level
of a minor and would like to pursue topics in poetry, history and theology.
Contact instructor before enrolling in this course.
