Extension Activities: 100% extension appointment. Mike works primarily with the Oklahoma nursery greenhouse industries such as Oklahoma Nursery and Landscape Association and Oklahoma Greeenhouse Growers' Association. His assistance consists of telephone consultations, formation of fact sheets and circulars, on-site visitations and numerous extension-based workshops throughout the year. He conducts many special projects including greenhouse and urban IPM, plant material conferences and specialty cut flower, poinsettia trials and other plant material demonstration plots. Mike also works with and assists peripheral groups/allied professionals such as landscape architects, urban foresters, arborists, landscapers and other green professionals. Mike assists with consumer horticultural programs via fact sheets and statewide master gardener training sessions.

Schnelle serves on boards and advisory committees for groups such as the Oklahoma Urban and Community Forestry Council, Cimarron Correctional Vo-Tech Facility Advisory Board, etc.  Schnelle also works closely with extension educators in all 77 counties.  Mike has served on their state committee (Oklahoma Association of Extension Agriculture Educators) as junior and senior director twice as well as being active with the group in other capacities.

Mike also has an interest in international horticulture. Schnelle has lectured and consulted at the University of Chihuahua, Mexico in 2004 on water quality in the nursery and landscape.  Mike also served as a faculty mentor for visiting Mexican scientists from Durango, Mexico, 2004-2005. Schnelle was invited to lecture on U.S. native plants to the Japanese Nurserymen Association's annual summer 2003 meeting in Tokyo, Japan.  In 2006, Schnelle worked in Baku, Azerbaijan and has on-going consulting activities with university faculty as well as Azerbaijan Peace Corps workers regarding projects in alternative agricultural crops for ornamental purposes. Mike taught a greenhouse production short course in Atrek, Turkmenistan in 2007 as well as working on a tree decline problem in Libya also in 2007. Schnelle is offering a study abroad experience for Oklahoma growers/retailers in Puebla, Mexico in September 2008.

Schnelle is active regionally and nationally via SR-ASHS and ASHS where he has served as chair of the national nursery working group as well as serving on the extension advisory council for the society.

Mike received general training in all horticultural crops although his greatest expertise is in woody and herbaceous ornamentals. His work is regularly published in NM PRO and American Nurseryman.  Lastly, Schnelle received classroom training from Kansas State University and has experience working in the field of horticultural therapy.  Mike has worked with physically challenged populations as well as clientele in a mental health facility.  He continues this interest via regularly scheduled horticultural therapy workshops.

Mike received a SR-ASHS publication award in 2006 for E-972, Landscaping with Trees, Shrubs and Vines (CD). Schnelle was named Outstanding State Specialist in 1998 by the Oklahoma Association of Extension Agricultural Educators.  In 1995, Mike was awarded the John E. Hutchinson Young Extension Professional award by the Southern Region American Society of Horticultural Science (SR-ASHS).  Schnelle has been recognized by other agencies for his extension publications with six regional awards by the SR-ASHS and two national publication awards by ASHS.   Additionally his work has been honored by Keep Oklahoma Beautiful Council and National Environmental Awards Council.  Mike received the Charles N. Shepardson Graduate Student Teaching Award in 1989, by Colorado State University, based on his interest in teaching herbaceous and woody plant material courses.

Lou teaches 6 courses for the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture.  HORT 2212 - Herbaceous Ornamental Plants, HORT 2313 - Landscape Plants I, HORT 4713 - Public Garden Management are the fall courses taught while HORT 2112 - Indoor Plants and Interior Plantscaping, HORT 2413 - Landscape Plants II, and HORT 4773 - Applied Landscape Planning are taught in the spring.

Teaching Activities: Dr. Cole teaches the following courses: Dr. Cole oversees the accredited landscape Contracting Program. She co-advises the OSU student chapter of the Professional Landcare Network. She also co-coaches the OSU Horticulture Judging Team.

Professional Activities: Dr. Cole is an active member of the American Society for Horticultural Science (ASHS). She served as Vice President for the Education Division from 2005-2007 and served as President of the Southern Region ASHS from 2004 to 2005.
