Information for Prospective Graduate Students
Admission Requirements:
Applicants should have a Bachelor of Science degree in forestry or a related field, a grade point average of 3.00 (4 = A) or above, acceptable scores on the Graduate Record Exam and a TOEFL score of 550 or above (international students only).
How to Apply:
Individuals interested in graduate study in the Forestry Program should directly contact the professor working in their area of interest for information. It is important to contact a professor, because prospective students will not be admitted to a graduate program in the Forestry Program until they have an advisor willing to advise them.
Formal application can be made by submitting the following directly to the Forestry Program:
1. Completed Graduate College application form and fee
2. Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended.
3. GRE scores
4. Three letters of reference
5. A one-page statement of purpose
6. Resume
7. TOEFL scores (International students only)
Formal application can also be made through the OSU Graduate College. You may apply for admission on line at the OSU Graduate College site. If you choose this method, be sure to send all supporting documentation (or copies of) directly to the Forestry Program. This will help us to evaluate your application more quickly.
When to Apply:
Application to the graduate program can be made at any time. However, you can begin a graduate program only at the beginning of a semester. This means all of your application materials must be received and processed before the semester you are planning start begins. Failure to do so will delay your admission.
The Forestry Program annually has a limited number of Departmental Research Assistantships available to students on a competitive basis. Departmental Research Assistantships for the Fall Semester of a given year are allocated on or about March 15 of the given year. Therefore, if you want to be considered for a Departmental Research Assistantship all of your application materials must be received by the Forestry Department by March 15.
At other times, individual professors may have assistantships available from research grant funding. Deadlines for application in such cases are set by the professor and limited by semester start dates. You must communicate with the professor
Financial Assistance:
A limited number of research assistantships are available through the Department funded by the Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station. As stated previously these assistantships are awarded annually on a competitive basis. Research assistantships carry a half-time stipend. Out-of-state tuition is waived for graduate students who are on an assistantship. Departmental assistantships currently pay $11,520/yr for MS students and $13,422/yr for Ph.D. students. If you are interested in a departmental research assistantship, make sure all of your paperwork is submitted before the March 15 deadline.
Other assistantships may become available as part of individual professor's research grants. Contact the professor in your area of interest directly for availability and requirements. Assistantship announcements are posted on the Forestry Department web site as well.
Current Research Assistantships
Tuition waivers may also be available through the Graduate College and the University. We have an excellent record in obtaining in-state tuition waivers for our domestic students. As a result, many of our domestic students pay only student fees and room and board while attending graduate school in our department.
All domestic graduate students are encouraged to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Scholarships and tuition waivers are often available based on financial need. A completed FAFSA is needed to make financial need determinations. See the OSU Graduate College web page for Financial Aid for additional details.
International Students:
In addition to completing and submitting all of the previously described paperwork, international students must insure that all paperwork to obtain the correct Visa is also completed.
See the OSU Graduate College web page on International Admissions for further details.
The OSU Office of International Students and Scholars (ISS) can also assist you in obtaining a Visa and answering any other questions you may have about OSU.
