Condoms

••• Why should I use them?

Condoms have long been used and are still being used today as a means of birth control. They are also very effective in preventing the spread of most Sexually Transmitted Diseases. Many sexually active individuals find that using condoms can add another dimension to the sexual experience and most condoms cause very little loss of sensitivity.

••• What kind should I use?

There are many brands and styles of condoms on the market today. The most important to look for before purchasing and using a condom is to be certain it is latex. Natural membrane condoms are not as effective in preventing disease due to their more open structure. Latex condoms lubricated with spermicide called Nonoxynol-9 provide additional protection againse the Human Immunodeficiency Virus. If Nonoxynol-9 causes skin irritation, discontinue its use. If a lubricant is needed use only water-based lubricants such as KY Jelly or other spermicidal jellies. Oil based lubricants such as Vaseling, massage oil, baby oil or other hand or body lotions can weaken condoms and cause them to break.

••• When should I use them?

A condom is a barrier that prevents the exchange of body fluids such as semen or vaginal secretions and should be used any time this possibility is likely to occur. Condoms must be used from start to finish, not just for ejaculation only. This barrier should be properly in place before any "fooling around" occurs. Also, condoms should be disposed of properly after ejaculation and before the penis becomes soft allowing a possible spill to occur.

••• How should I use them?

  1. Put the condom on the erect penis before the first contact with the vagina or anus.
  2. Pinch the reservoir tip or half and inch at the tip of the condom saving a space to collect semen.
  3. Unroll the condom to the base of the penis. (If it doesn't unroll it is probably inside out. Don't flip it over because it could be wet with pre-ejaculate. Instead, dispose of it and start with a newly unwrapped condom.)
  4. After ejaculation, slowly withdraw the penis while it is still erect, hold on to the base of the condom to avoid letting it slip off. Remove the condom carefully and dispose of properly.

••• Remember - The Three C's of Condom Use

  • CORRECTLY
  • CONSISTENTLY
  • CAREFULLY
