Summary Statement

At the beginning of this semester, I set four objectives for myself in order to make myself want to finish this class on a positive note. I am happy to say that I fulfilled my objectives to the best of my ability.  Let me start with my first objective of learning about Honduras in general.  I learned a great deal about the people and how they view the world. They may not have much, but they do have they value.  They are able to take very little and work it to forge out a living.  They are very proud of what they have because they have worked very hard to get it.

My second objective was to learn enough Spanish to be dangerous.  I know that I rarely spoke it, but I knew enough to know when I being insulted or when people were speaking it around me.  I am quite proud of that.

The third was to travel to a foreign country and survive.  I didn't think that I would make it after that Punta Sal trip, but I did.  I know I did a lot of complaining to get up those little mountains, but that was the only way I was going to get up them. Looking back I am glad I did it.

My last objective was to find out my strengths and weaknesses when it comes to taking on this sort of experience. My weaknesses showed up in the form of physical weaknesses.  Next time I go into a jungle or something I will be in better physical condition.

As for the course itself, I think this is really good course for first-time international experience.   The class times were really helpful in giving us background on Honduras.  I learned a lot about a country I never thought I would know about.  The amount of deforestation is appalling, but to people who don't understand the culture it is even more so.  Going there and seeing why it so prevalent I understand better now why it is happening.

I really enjoyed being a part of this class.  I have a whole new respect for the Honduran people.  I think I may have felt sorry for them for not having what we have.  What I didn't realize is that what they have is pride in themselves and for working hard to achieve what they do have.  This whole experience has really opened my eyes to another different culture.  It is hard to understand about a place and to know a culture unless you go there and experience it.
