SUMMARY STATEMENT
I can only say good things about this class. It is the best class that I have ever taken, for obvious reasons. It was informal and informative, and I have probably learned more in this class than any other book/note-taking/test class. This experience and information will stick with me much longer than the others too.
This class has been helpful to me in many different ways. It has assisted me in determining my purpose for attending college and getting an education. It has shown me the way to achieve what I want to do with my life and helped me to determine the direction in which I will dedicate my life. It has opened my mind to new and different possibilities and opportunities. It also gave me the push to begin researching these subjects (language, culture, agroforestry, tropical conservation, etc.) on my own, and even write a paper about it for other classes.
In terms of fulfilling my contract, I feel that I have. My knowledge of the forestry and conservation practices in third world countries, particularly Honduras, has greatly increased. I have seen those practices first-hand, and have heard directly from the people themselves their problems, gains, hopes, and wishes.
I was able to interact with the people and have full-length discussions with them about their culture and lifestyle, and what they think about Americans and our culture. I found that the Hondurans are more open than Americans are. They are more willing to put themselves out and help, even if it costs them valuable time. They are a very friendly people, and I shall miss them.
In terms of preparing me for a future study abroad, I think that it is an excellent stepping stone for me. It put me in a semi-controlled environment and gave me the ability to determine for myself how I would respond to different situations such as relating to the people and adapting to another culture. It also gave me an excellent chance to practice my Spanish. I fully expect to attend a study abroad now. This has only affirmed and increased the desire.
My advice to anyone even considering a class such as this, involving a trip to another country, or a study abroad – DO IT! Regardless of the cost and inconvenience that it may cause you in the beginning, it will be worth it. Learn to open your mind to other cultures and opportunities. Put the effort forward to learn another language. It will be a great and unforgettable experience for you, just as it was for me.
